NEET Reservation – AIQ and State Quota for MBBS/BDS

Latest Update: According to the most recent information, NTA will conduct the NEET or National Eligibility cum Entrance Test soon. The online registration will begin shortly.

Specific Authorities Providing the Required Certificate for Reserved Categories

The NEET offers reservation facilities to Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes, Other Backward Classes, and PwD – Locomotor disability. All that they would require are their respective caste or status (in the case of PWD) certificates. In this regard, however, each category has its authority that would provide them with these certificates.

Important Points about NEET Reservation

  1. The Tamil Nadu Government has given its approval for a proposal regarding a 7.5% reservation for medical admission of the students of government schools.
  2. Spouses and children of terror attack victims will get reservation in MBBS and BDS admissions under the central pool of seats for medical admissions.
  3. As per the government policy, seat reservation for the GEN-EWS candidates is kept at 10%. The earning member’s income should be less than 8 lakh per annum for a general candidate to be considered as EWS students.
  4. Reservation to counseling of students will be given as per Statutory Regulation of MCI/NMC/DCI and judgments of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India for 15% All India Quota seats.
  5. Candidates belonging to J and K, and Ladakh shall not be eligible to appear in the counseling for seats through 15% AIQ. This is so because these Union Territories are exempted from the All India Scheme. The self-declaration form to be signed by the students while claiming eligibility.
  6. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are now eligible for 15% All India Quota seats. Earlier both the states had opted out of the NEET All India scheme. Candidates belonging to these states can claim eligibility for 15% All India Quota Seats but they must submit an online Self-Declaration.

This prestigious medical entrance exam allocates colleges to eligible candidates after the counselling process. The counselling process works on two levels: state and national. Now, to each of these, NEET has a different reservation of seats, which comes under NEET reservation criteria.

Here are the quota reservation statistics of All India and State level for MBBS and BDS.

Reservation for 15% AIQ Seats

List of candidates who are eligible to avail of the 15% NEET All India Quota seats are:

  • Indian Nationals
  • PIOs (Persons of Indian Origin)
  • NRIs (Non-Resident Indians)
  • OCIs (Overseas Citizens of India)
  • Foreign Nationals

According to the NEET reservation criteria, 5% of 15% All India Quota will be reserved for aspirants coming under the Person with Disabilities category. As per the Rights of Persons with Disability Act, 2016. The admission to this reserved section will be based on the results of NEET.

As per reservation criteria, the certificate in respect of PwD candidate must be issued from amongst one of the following: a. All India Institute of Physical Medicine b. Rehabilitation or Madras Medical College c. Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital or, d. Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research.

15% of these seats are reserved for Scheduled Castes, 7.5% for Scheduled Tribes, and 27% for OBC candidates.

NEET Reservation for EWS Category

10% quota of reserved jobs and education will be provided to the EWS candidates belonging to the General Quota under the 124th Amendment Bill of the Parliament of India under the Indian Constitution. To be eligible under the EWS category, the NEET reservation criteria are as given below :

  1. Family’s ownership of agricultural land < 5 acres
  2. Family’s Gross Annual Income < INR 8 lakh and the candidate is not falling under the scheme of SCs, STs and OBCs reservation category
  3. Ownership of residential plots < 200 sq yards (unnotified municipalities)
  4. Ownership of residential flat < 1000 sq ft
  5. If the ownership of residential plots < 100 sq yards (notified municipalities)

NEET Reservation Criteria for PwD under AIQ

  • 5% of AIQ seats are reserved for Physically Handicapped Candidates or PWD candidates.
  • Persons with any kind of locomotor disability can avail of this booking, but their disability percentage has to be 40% or more to avail of the seats under this quota.
  • For this reservation, candidates shall apply with the Certificate of Disability as the PwD candidates need to submit the certificate for this facility.
  • Following colleges can facilitate the generation of Certificate of Disability for PWD candidates:All India Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Mumbai
  1. Madras Medical College, Chennai
  2. Vardhman Mahavir Medical College, Delhi
  3. Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research, Kolkata

Reservation in NEET for 85% State Quota for MBBS

Admission to seats other than those of All India Quota comprises State Quota. It constitutes 85% of the total seats. The admissions to these seats are done with the help of respective state authorities. Here, candidates will have to fulfill the NEET eligibility criteria set by the individual state for reserved categories. They should also fulfill the minimum marks criteria in NEET . The candidates can also get entry into private colleges through state quota seats.

It differs from state to state since the reservation quota seats are decided by the state authorities themselves. In every single state, there would be issued a merit list in the state quota. In all, 85% of such seats are granted via the process of state counselling done separately by every state/ Union Territory. In this regard, dates and procedure of the same can be enquired by the candidates contacting respective state counseling authority.

It is to be noted that AFMC Pune has its own reservation policy. The institute provides no concession to Physically Handicapped candidates. AFMC Pune has a different selection procedure that does not involve NEET as the second round. The candidates willing to get admission to AFMC need to visit their official website. Aspirants are supposed to register themselves on the official website of AFMC for further screening tests. Merely qualifying the NEET  would not guarantee admission to the AFMC Pune medical course.
