Understanding an Electric Motor and Its Functioning
An electric motor is a machine that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. Most motors achieve this conversion by leveraging the interaction between a magnetic field and an electric current flowing through a coil, generating a force (torque) on the motor’s shaft.
Working Principle:
An electric motor operates based on the magnetic effect of electric current. When a rectangular coil is placed in a magnetic field and current flows through it, forces are exerted on the coil, causing it to rotate. This rotation is the basis for generating mechanical energy.
Main Components of an Electric Motor:
- DC Power Supply: This supplies the power needed for the motor to operate.
- Commutator: This component changes the direction of the current from the power source to ensure smooth rotation of the motor.
- Rotor (Armature): The rotor rotates continuously while the motor is in operation, facilitating the movement and transfer of electrical energy to other parts of the motor.
- Axle:The axle supports rotational motion, allowing the motor’s power to be directed as needed (such as in steering and gearing for electric vehicles).
- Field Magnet: This magnet generates a magnetic field within the motor, enabling the coil within the DC motor to rotate as current flows.
In essence, the basic concept of an electric motor is straightforward: electricity flows in, and a rotating shaft delivers mechanical power that can drive a machine.
